Collision Damage Waiver Hire Car Excess Cover
The BMA Travel Insurance policy can now be extended to cover all insured persons over 21 years old for the excess payable for damage to the vehicle when hiring a car as part of a trip or holiday.
When you hire a car in Europe, Africa, New Zealand, Australia and most countries in the Middle and Far East, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft and Third Party Liability are normally included, however, in nearly all cases the insurance provided has an Excess on the CDW and theft element. This excess can range from £100 to over £1,000. It is this excess that your policy can be extended to cover.
Hire car companies can make significant charges for this extra cover and it can cost from £6 - £10 per day or more depending on the hire company, the level of excess and category of car chosen.
If you are hiring your car in North America, The Caribbean or South America, generally insurance is not provided or if it is the cover is can be very limited and you must purchase CDW (also known as Loss Damage Waiver - LDW) cover and Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) cover. This will be sold to you when you pick up your car and will cost US$20-US$30 per day. The CDW/LDW cover purchased may have an excess (or deductible). Again it is this excess that your policy can be extended to cover.
The Cover
The policy extension covers up to £1,500 against the accidental damage excess (CDW) and up to a further £500 to replace the car keys if lost, stolen or damaged.
Single trip cover extension starts from as little as £3.30* for the whole trip (* based on an individual aged 45, travelling for up to 5 days to Europe)
Annual Multi-trip cover extension from only £13.85* per year (*based on an individual aged 45, with European cover)
